In recent years, space telescopes, orbital probes, and robotic explorers on neighboring planets have provided scientists with an enormous amount of visual data. We have been able to see incredible star clusters, the structure of distant galaxies, nebulae, and even rocks on Mars and the Moon. However, few people know that these images do not appear exactly as they do in reality. All space photographs are adapted for the human eye—they undergo special color correction based on a scientific approach. Graphic designers specifically enhance the surface images to resemble Earth’s daylight conditions, making it easier for geologists to identify mineral compositions. But when humans set foot on these planets, their perception may be entirely different. What color is space really? And does it hold the same vibrant palette as Earth?
