The series of creative meetings with Russian cosmonauts continues at the Educational Center of the Tsiolkovsky State Museum of the History of Cosmonautics as part of our festival. On April 13, the guest was Hero of Russia and Russian Federation cosmonaut Sergey Prokopyev. With two spaceflights, eight spacewalks, and a total of 567 days on the ISS behind him, Prokopyev shared his experiences with the audience.
Together with his crew, which included cosmonauts Dmitry Petelin and Frank Rubio, Sergey Prokopyev spent 371 days aboard the station - a record for the longest spaceflight after cosmonauts Valery Polyakov and Sergey Avdeev.
The audience, especially the children, came well-prepared for the meeting with Sergey Valeryevich. They asked about cosmonaut training in anechoic chambers, free time on the ISS, relationships with family, psychological pressure, and the most frightening and exhilarating moments in space. One of those moments, Prokopyev said, was the first spacewalk.
"For many who step into open space for the first time, it’s difficult to take that first step beyond the airlock once it’s open. In front of you is a vacuum, and it feels like you could be blown away from the station by the wind. But once you step out, you realize - there’s no wind at all. It’s one of the most thrilling sensations a cosmonaut can experience in space," Sergey Prokopyev shared.
The Tsiolkovsky International Space Film Festival in 2024 is held with the support of the Presidential Fund for Cultural Initiatives, State Corporation "Roscosmos," Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center Research Institute, Rossotrudnichestvo, the Government and Ministry of Culture of the Kaluga Region, the Tsiolkovsky State Museum of the History of Cosmonautics, the Russian Planetarium Association, and other public and commercial organizations.
