Documentary and Archival Film Day at the V Tsiolkovsky International Space Film Festival

April 14 has been designated as Archives Day at the Tsiolkovsky International Space Film Festival. The festival organizers recognize the invaluable role of archives in preserving historical heritage and in studying and understanding the past through the lens of film documents. Archives hold information that allows us to travel through time, reconstruct past events, and gain a deeper understanding of the present.

The Russian State Archive of Film and Photo Documents (RGAKFD) and the Russian State Archive of Scientific and Technical Documentation (RGANTD) have prepared three special screenings for festival guests. These screenings will undoubtedly captivate anyone interested in history, space, and science. The screenings will take place at the State Museum of the History of Cosmonautics and Kaluga State University named after K.E. Tsiolkovsky.

The “Archives: For the Future” screening features two short but truly unique documentary films: Seeing the Past and Absolutely not a secret. The first film commemorates the 90th anniversary of RGAKFD, while the second marks the 50th anniversary of RGANTD.

The next special screening is dedicated to the anniversary of Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin, the world's first cosmonaut. Viewers will watch the 1961 documentary First Flight to the Stars, provided by RGAKFD, along with exclusive documentary footage that was not included in the film and is preserved in RGANTD.

The third screening, titled “Venus – the Russian Planet”, will be presented by Lev Matveyevich Zelyony, an academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, scientific director of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, professor, and doctor of physics and mathematics. This session will feature RGANTD’s documentaries Automated Interplanetary Stations Venus-7 and Venus-8, along with RGAKFD’s documentary Back to Venus.

Additionally, on April 14, the festival will host a press conference with archive directors and festival organizers.

The Tsiolkovsky International Space Film Festival in 2024 is held with the support of the Presidential Fund for Cultural Initiatives, State Corporation Roscosmos, Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center Research Institute, Rossotrudnichestvo, the Government and Ministry of Culture of the Kaluga Region, the State Museum of the History of Cosmonautics, the Association of Russian Planetariums, and other public and commercial organizations.
