How the Archives Day Unfolded at the Tsiolkovsky International Space Film Festival

On April 14, the festival dedicated a special day to state archives - the Russian State Archive of Film and Photo Documents (RGAKFD) and the Russian State Archive of Scientific and Technical Documentation (RGANTD). As part of this collaboration, the archives organized a captivating program that was highly appreciated by the Kaluga audience, as evidenced by the large number of attendees.

The day began with a press conference featuring directors and representatives of RGAKFD and RGANTD - Nikolay Pestov, Sergey Perekhodov, and Marina Malyutina - alongside festival representatives Nikolay Mayorov and Irina Soshnikova. The conference addressed intriguing questions such as whether it is possible to review all documents stored in the archives, what it feels like to touch an original photo album of Alexander II, and the necessary conditions for preserving valuable historical records.
The archives' program featured three screening sessions.

The first session included the documentary To See the Past, dedicated to RGAKFD’s 90th anniversary, and the experimental vario polyscreen film Absolutely NOT Secret, marking RGANTD’s 50th anniversary. The latter was presented in a stereo format. These screenings provided viewers with insights into archival work, highlighting that being an archivist is a challenging yet fascinating profession.

A special screening was dedicated to Yuri Gagarin. RGAKFD presented the 1961 documentary First Flight to the Stars, filmed in the wake of the first cosmonaut’s historic journey into space. RGANTD supplemented the screening with unique archival footage that had not been included in the original film.
The third session was introduced by academician Lev Zelyony, Scientific Director of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, professor, and Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences. The session's theme, Venus: The Russian Planet, attracted not only adults but also many children and teenagers eager to hear from the distinguished physicist.

On April 15, a unique photo exhibition featuring images from RGAKFD and technical drawings from RGANTD opened at Kaluga State University named after K.E. Tsiolkovsky.
