Science fiction writer Sergey Chichin met with readers at the VI Tsiolkovsky International Space Film Festival

The meeting took place at the V. Belinsky Kaluga Regional Scientific Library. Sergey Chichin spoke about his literary journey, which, in the spirit of Mayakovsky, began with learning the alphabet from shop signs, and about the inextricable link between the skills of a competent reader and the position of a sought-after author.

Chichin’s characters range widely: from grotesquely comic fantasy figures to convincingly drawn contemporaries; united by meticulous development that gives even minor characters vividness and life. His masterful command of both language fundamentals and complex literary techniques, along with his signature dark sense of humor, sets him apart. At the same time, he doesn’t pursue formal linguistic refinement, allowing his stories to sound as the embedded intellect of the text demands, even if that means his books often come with an “18+” label.

“I’m very glad I had the chance to speak to a real audience, rather than nameless, faceless trolls on the internet,” said Sergey Chichin.

Attendees asked Sergey Alexandrovich about his favorite works and authors, the prospects of literature and artificial intelligence within it, how to become a writer, and much more.
