Maria SERGEYENKOVA. Master Class “EMOTIONS IN CINEMA”

Festival guests learned more about emotions and cinema.

On April 14, Maria Sergeyenkova, a film editor, director, screenwriter, creative producer, and member of the Union of Cinematographers of the Russian Federation, conducted the master class “Emotions in Cinema” at the ICC as part of the VI Tsiolkovsky International Space Film Festival.

Maria shared her insights on the history and future of cinema, including developments in virtual reality. She discussed how emotions affect the brain, the concept of emotional consumption, and research on emotions. The film editor reminded the audience of the “Kuleshov Effect”, a phenomenon in which identical shots acquire different meanings when edited in different sequences.

“We have a certain set of emotions, and most of them are negative, while joy is the only positive one, and it needs to be strengthened. The more you enjoy yourself, watch comedies and rom-coms, and get this kind of pleasure, the more ‘joy neurons’ you will have, and the easier life will be. But that doesn’t mean we should abandon drama!” noted Maria Sergeyenkova.
